Kurosaki Ichigo adalah seorang anak SMA biasa sampai keluarganya diserang oleh Hollow, roh rusak yang mengincar jiwa manusia. Kejadian itu membuatnya bertemu dengan Shinigami bernama Kuchiki Rukia yang terluka saat melindungi keluarga Ichigo. Untuk menyelamatkan keluarganya, Ichigo menerima tawaran Rukia untuk mengambil alih kekuatannya dan menjadi Shinigami.
Akan tetapi, karena Rukia tak bisa mendapatkan kembali kekuatannya, Ichigo pun diberi tugas berbahaya untuk membasmi para Hollow yang berkeliaran di kotanya. Dia tak bertarung sendirian, dia bersama teman sekelasnya, Inoue Orihime, Sado Yasutora, Ishida Uryuu yang masing-masing dari mereka memiliki kekuatan tersendiri. Ichigo dan teman-temannya pun mulai terbiasa dengan tugas mereka dan saling membantu satu sama lain dalam medan pertarungan. Lambat laun sang Shinigami muda tersebut menyadari kalau yang berbahaya bukan hanya Hollow.
